Tuition fees will rise to an average of £8,393 per year from 2012, according to official figures released today.
That figure drops to £8,161 when fee waivers for poorer students are included.
There are also some geographic differences. More than a third of English universities will charge the maximum £9,000 as their standard fee next year.
Only two HE institutions are charging below £6,000, Manchester College and Croydon College. Vince Cable, the Business Secretary, had originally promised that any institution charging over £6,000 would be an “exceptional circumstance.”
Every university charging above £6,000 a year has been approved by the Office For Fair Access. Cambridge’s access agreement means they have accepted the goal of increasing the proportion of state-educated students to 61-63% within five years, as they are charging the maximum £9,000.
