It’s your first night out with the guy you met last weekend. Things seem to be heating up at dinner (and it’s definitely not just the spicy number seven tikka masala you just shared) when the bill comes. Dilemma! Do you reach for the receipt or wait for your date to take the tab? Verge talked to guys and girls around London to find out what they would do.
What they said
- “The guy. He’s usually the one that asks the girl out.” – Sophie Krypner
- “The guy. I’m always trying to impress the girl.” – Richard Heathcote
- “Me, of course, if I invited the person. In general I don’t expect people to pay.” – Omar Romanini
- “If he’s rich he should pay. If she’s rich she should pay.” – Laia Mulet
- “The guy because it’s chivalrous. We’re still old fashioned like that.” – Elizabeth Cavell and Tracy Dennis
- “It’s not important. One or the other should pay.” – Carmen Chamorro
“The guy. It’s polite.”
-Rebekah Hoodless, student at Royal Academy of the Arts
“Go dutch. We’re not old fashioned anymore. If you’ve got the money you should both pay.”
-Eleanor Stokoe
