Verge talked with hip hop artist Wretch 32, whose latest single “Hush Little Baby” just hit the airwaves.

 The Chat

“Hush Little Baby” is the fifth single from your album ‘Black and White’ and it features Ed Sheeran. Did you approach him? How did it happen?

“Yeah sort of. I’ve known Ed for some time now coming from the same grime scene and having worked with him before. I reached out again asking him to jump on ‘Hush Little Baby’ and I was delighted when he agreed to do so.”

Your doing a tour at the moment. How has that been going?

“It’s going really well, been having so much fun. Every city so far has been a blast.”

Are you starting to feel like all your hard work is starting pay off as your receiving great recognition in the industry now?

“Nah, if I start thinking like that at this stage it might make me complacent and take my eye of the ball. I like to think of it as making a small ripple in a big pond. There so much more recognition in the industry to gain.”

What has been a highlight for you so far?

“Charting, I guess. I never thought it was possible for me. Saying that it’s all a big highlight for me.”

Who do you really want to work with that you yet haven’t?

“Coldplay or Damien Marley”

Your doing lots of the festivals this year —are you excited about them? You are also performing at the Olympic Torch relay celebrations…Are you excited about the Olympics?

“Yeah I’ve got a whole summer full of festive shows and I’m well excited about performing and taking part in the relay. I’m well competitive so I’ll be gutted if we lose.”

What other things have you got planned this year? Perhaps a holiday?

“Nah no holidays planned for this year.  I’ve scheduled my holiday for 2015 until then work, work, work! Going to be cracking on over the summer with the festivals and hopefully finish off the new album in time to push this year.”

Have you got any thoughts on the next album and when we could expect to hear that?

“Yeah I’ve been preforming a couple tracks from my new album on tour. We’re at the back end of finishing it at the moment and hopefully I’ll be able to release it by the end of the year.

There’s some energetic tracks like ‘Traktor’ as well as heartfelt ones like ‘Don’t Go’ and some not so obvious sounds and me going in with the metaphors as per usual.”
