British Men Prefer Brains Over Beauty

Half of all men (50%) in Britain are most attracted to brainy girls with a sense of humour and a sophisticated dress sense, according to new research released today.

It seems that the number of brain cells matters more to British men than being the life and soul of the party.  The findings also confirm that men are less attracted to the likes of the ‘TOWIE’ cast, and prefer women like Kate Middleton, with the average British male’s ultimate girl being 5ft 6″ with dark brown, shoulder-length hair, blue eyes, and skin with a hint of bronze.

Contrary to popular belief, looks aren’t everything as nearly three quarters (72%) of British men are turned on more by personality than looks with the nation’s ideal girl being interested in music (31%), movies (28%), travel and sightseeing (32%).  In addition, this ‘ideal girl’ must be funny, sensitive and thoughtful whilst also being outgoing.

The research also reveals that UK girls’ preferences match those of their male counterparts with exactly half of women (50%) choosing a brainy guy as their most attractive.  Equally, girls of the nation look for the same top 5 personality traits in men with a slightly higher proportion than men choosing personality over looks (82%).

Psychologist, Dr. David Lewis said: “The findings suggest that male and female roles are evolving as what men look for in a woman are becoming more in line with what women typically look for in a man. Although we are initially attracted to someone through physical features, it’s now more important to people that their partners are companions rather than ‘trophies’. The recent economic downturn could also play a part in this evolvement, as we’ve become less materialistic as a nation than before the recession, and now seek partners who can provide us with contentment and security.”

The top 5 most attractive personality traits for a woman to have:

1. Funny (21%)

2. Thoughtful (20%)

3. Sociable (14%)

4. Confident (10%)

5. Romantic (9%)

The survey was commissioned by Lynx, the UK’s No.1 grooming brand, who have re-launched their coloured shower gel range with each variant designed to help men keep up with five different types of girl.

British girl types in order of preference:

1. Brainy (50%)

2. Flirtatious (25%)

3. Sporty (14%)

4. High Maintenance (6%)

5. Party Animal (5%)

Surprisingly, the nation has not been inspired by the British sporting summer with just 14% finding sporty types of girls the most attractive, although Londoners are getting into the spirit with more men from the capital preferring the sporting type than any other city in the UK (18%).

It seems British men need all the help they can get in keeping up with girls like Rihanna, with only 1 in 20 (5%) saying they are most attracted to party animals with energetic personalities, making it the least attractive ‘type’ of girl.

When looking at the archetypal North-South divides, the results show consistency between all UK regions with men in agreement with what they look for in a girl.  Surprisingly though when delving a little deeper, more Geordie lads are clearly attracted to shy girls (13%) rather than the likes of the lasses we see on ‘Geordie Shore’ with only 5% attracted to the more ‘sociable’ types.  Men from Northern Ireland also showed a dislike of outgoing types with no one being attracted to sociable personalities (0%).  On the other hand, men from Leeds were the only city to have flirty girls at the top of their list (38%).

Lynx Brand Manager, Kavi Tolani, said: “We’ve always known guys have preferences for different personality types and it’s great to see this in our results. It’s clear that different cultures and upbringings across the UK can make the mating game very competitive within regions, putting pressure on guys to succeed when they meet girls exhibiting a desired personality type.  The new Lynx shower gel range has therefore been developed to help guys feel great whatever the situation and primed to stay ahead in the mating game”.
